Why the Bahamas Should Be at the Top of Your Yacht Charter Destination List

If you’re considering a yacht charter anywhere in the world, there’s a strong argument that the Bahamas should be at, or very near the top of your list.

I’ll admit upfront, I might be a little biased. I partially grew up in the Bahamas and have spent a huge portion of my life sailing and diving there. I’ve also sailed over halfway around the world and been lucky enough to lay my eyes on some absolutely stunning locations, but to this day, the Bahamas is still my favorite cruising ground in the world.

Why? The vast water clarity, combined with the beaches, combined with the shifting sandbars, combined with protected anchorages, combined with the marine life, combined with a massive cruising ground, equals this:

If the photos are not enough, read on.

Yes, you can find clear blue water elsewhere. Yes, you can find beautiful beaches in many places. But nowhere else offers these things on the sheer scale and quantity that the Bahamas does, especially for yacht charters that mostly take place in the Exumas and Abacos.

Below are just a few reasons why the Bahamas should be at the top of your charter yacht destination list:

The Water: Unmatched Clarity on an Unmatched Scale

Let’s start with the obvious—and still somehow underrated—feature: the water. The Bahamas doesn’t just have clear water. It has square miles upon square miles of shallow, crystal-clear turquoise water that feels almost unreal.

In fact, it’s beautiful waters are so vast, you can see them all the way from space! Click HERE to view Nasa Astronaut Scott Kelly’s photos of the Bahamas during his year in Space.

In places like the Exuma Bank, you can literally sail for an entire day over 10–15 feet of visibility-perfect water, watching the bottom glide by beneath your hull like an aquarium. At every anchorage you can see your anchor chain from the bow of the boat all the way to the anchor. Other destinations have pockets of that “Bahamas blue.” But nowhere else has it on the scale the Bahamas does and spread across such a massive cruising area. It’s not just one beach or one bay—it’s the entire island nation.

Busy Season… That Doesn’t Feel Busy

The Bahamas’ high season generally runs from November through April, when much of North America is looking for sunshine and warmth. Yes, this is the busier time of year—but here’s the key difference: Even at its busiest, the Bahamas is not nearly as crowded as many popular Caribbean destinations.

Why? Simple geography.

The Bahamas is made up of hundreds of islands and cays, spread across a vast area. That means even during peak season, you can almost always find a beach, anchorage, or sandbar that feels like it’s entirely yours. That “blow-you-away” moment where you step ashore and look around wondering how no one else is there—still happens regularly.

And that’s what makes the Bahamas so special: space. Real, tangible space to explore.

The Exumas: Island Hopping Perfection

If there’s one area that consistently steals people’s hearts, it’s the Exumas.

From a sailing and charter perspective, the Exumas are nearly perfect. You’re cruising inside the Exuma Bank, which means:

  • Protected waters
  • Flat-calm anchorages
  • Consistent trade winds without big seas
  • Easy island-to-island hops

You get the joy of sailing without the fatigue of pounding into open-ocean swell. Easterly prevailing winds are typical, and the islands themselves provide protection, making conditions ideal for both experienced sailors and first-time charterers.

During winter months, cold fronts do pass through and winds can clock around the compass—but even then, there’s almost always a protected anchorage available. The Exumas offer options.

Exumas Highlights (Just to Name a Few)

  • Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park – One of the most pristine marine protected areas in the world
  • Warderick Wells – Iconic anchorages, hiking, and unbelievable water clarity
  • Thunderball Grotto – Snorkeling straight out of a movie
  • Big Major Cay (Swimming Pigs) – Fun, surreal, and still worth experiencing
  • Endless sandbars, reefs, and quiet beaches you won’t find on Instagram

When it comes to island hopping, it truly doesn’t get better.

The Abacos: Easy Cruising, Charming Settlements

While the Exumas often get the spotlight, the Abacos deserve serious consideration—especially for guests who love charming towns mixed with relaxed cruising.

The Abacos offer:

  • Short, easy hops between islands
  • Well-marked cruising grounds
  • More protected routes, ideal for relaxed itineraries
  • Classic Bahamian settlements with real character

Places like Hope Town, Green Turtle Cay, Man-O-War Cay, and Marsh Harbour provide a balance of local culture, laid-back dining, and scenic anchorages. It’s a slightly different vibe than the Exumas—less wild, a bit more village-oriented—but still undeniably Bahamian.

Underwater Wildlife: A World-Class, Often Overlooked Experience

This is where the Bahamas truly separates itself, and where most charter articles fall short. If you’re even remotely interested in snorkeling, diving, freediving, or marine life, the Bahamas is in a league of its own.

Shark Diving & Big Encounters

  • Hammerhead sharks in Bimini
  • Tiger sharks in Grand Bahama
  • Reef shark dives in Bimini, Nassau, and throughout the islands
  • Oceanic whitetip shark dives off Cat Island (seasonal—and absolutely legendary)

These aren’t rare, once-in-a-lifetime events. These are established, ethical dive experiences run by some of the best operators in the world.

Dolphins in Bimini

Bimini offers what many consider the best wild dolphin encounters on the planet. These dolphins are famously social and curious, and swimming with them—on their terms—is an unforgettable experience.

We’re close friends with several of the top dive operators in the Bahamas, including Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center, and can help arrange everything from casual dives to highly specialized experiences.

For those looking for something truly next-level, we can also connect you with Andre Musgrove—a legendary Bahamian dive guide who will come directly to your yacht and act as your private adventure guide. Few people know these waters like he does.

Living From the Sea: Spearfishing, Fishing & Fresh Food

If your idea of the perfect charter includes living close to the ocean—catching your own food and staying connected to the environment—there’s no better place.

The Bahamas offers:

  • Spearfishing for hogfish, lobster, and grouper
  • Excellent reef fishing year-round
  • Seasonal offshore fishing for mahi-mahi, wahoo, and tuna

There’s something deeply satisfying about catching dinner, preparing it onboard, and enjoying it at anchor in water so clear it barely feels real.

The People & Culture

Beyond the scenery, the Bahamas shines because of its people.

Locals are generally warm, funny, welcoming, and genuine. There’s an ease to Bahamian culture that makes visitors feel at home quickly. Whether you’re stopping in a small settlement, chatting at a dock, or sharing stories over a beer, it’s a place that feels human and real.

A Note on Costs: VAT & Charter Pricing

No destination is perfect, and it’s worth addressing one downside honestly: Bahamas charter VAT.

The Bahamas does impose a VAT on yacht charters, which can add a noticeable amount to the overall cost compared to some other destinations. It’s something we always explain clearly upfront so there are no surprises.

That said, most guests find that the experience—the water, space, wildlife, and ease of cruising—more than justifies it.

Final Thoughts: Why the Bahamas Wins

There are many incredible places to charter a yacht. But the Bahamas offers a combination that’s incredibly hard to beat:

  • Unmatched water clarity on a massive scale
  • Endless island-hopping opportunities
  • Protected sailing grounds
  • World-class diving and wildlife
  • Warm, welcoming culture
  • Freedom to explore without crowds

I may be biased—but after decades on the water and thousands of miles sailed, I truly believe the Bahamas is one of the best yacht charter destinations on Earth.

And once you’ve spent a week there, chances are you’ll feel the same.
